Court rules in favour of plans for 178 secured market rental housing units in the West End

Today the BC Supreme Court ruled in favour of Vancouver City Council’s proposed rezoning of 1754-1772 Pendrell Street, which would be rezoned to allow for a 21-storey multiple dwelling building containing 178 secured market rental housing units, 26 of which are secured for 30 years with rents at 20 per cent below the average West End area market rents.


“We are very pleased with the court’s ruling in the City’s favour. This is a very positive step for both the West End and affordable housing in Vancouver,” said Mayor Gregor Robertson. “This new development provides 178 new rental homes, including 26 at below market rents, in a neighbourhood with one of the lowest vacancy rates in the city. This is the type of housing Vancouver needs and we are pleased that it can now proceed.”


This project, which was approved by Council in September 2015, would make a significant contribution towards the City’s overall affordable housing goals as identified in the Housing and Homelessness Strategy as well as key housing directions under the West End Community Plan. It would add an additional 178 units of new secured market rental housing to the city’s aging rental housing stock, and replacing the existing 26 units at the current site with housing stock that would offer greater affordability than market rents. Rental housing provides a more affordable housing option for nearly half of Vancouver’s population; however, Vancouver has one of the lowest vacancy rates in Canada.
