Happy Earth Day!
April 22nd, 2017 is Earth Day. It’s hard to believe that the very first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970. I was in high school and had long, dark hair, basically slept in my faded skinny jeans and, wore red Adidas Gazelle sneakers. I know what you’re thinking. Man was he cool. I was. By the way, red Adidas Gazelle sneakers are back in style again.
Needless to say Mother Earth and I have both aged. I’m not sure who’s the worse for wear. Well, on some days, I definitely know it’s me. On most others, I worry quite a lot about Mother Earth and what the future holds for my kids and grandkids.
Here at LandlordBC try to do our part to mitigate our impact on the planet. We’re reasonably diligent about recycling, including organics. We don’t use bottled water. We turn our office computers and lights off at night. Some of us walk to work every day. We use a heck of a lot less paper. Perhaps not much in the overall scheme of things but, we feel they all help.
As an organization we pride ourselves on being the energy efficiency/sustainability leader for the rental housing industry through our “Operation Co$t-Cutter” program. With the assistance of a few key partnerships we have helped landlords replace a couple thousand old toilets to low-flow toilets, and even more low flow faucets and shower heads. LED lighting too. Then there are high efficiency boilers. We’re up to in the order of two hundred and counting. We’re also leading the way to educate our industry about energy efficiency and, supporting construction innovations like Passive House. We’re always on the lookout for new and better ways to consume less energy and reduce our carbon footprint.
So while we know there’s much more that we can do, we remain committed to ensuring that we are always cognizant of our impact on Mother Earth and try to take corrective action accordingly. We hope you will too.
